of Religious Interest:
Amarkantak
Na rmada,
one of the most sacred rivers of India, takes birth here in the lofty
place nestling in the Mekhala ranges in Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh.
Two more rivers, Sone and Bhadra also originate here along with Jwala
spring.
It is amidst dense forests, still virgin and to a large extent unpolluted
by the effects of industrialisation and modern civilization. The Narmada,
whose majestic temple is the center of attraction emanates from a beautiful
pond here. The temple set in the midst of lush green forests is a cynosure
of all people, specially tribals like Gonds. The coins thrown into the
ponds, which are visible in the crystal clear transparent water, reflect
in a way, the condition of the people living here. Coins of less denomination
are found offered to the deity here.
A beautiful, intricately carved old temple complex along with a pond is
also a place of attraction here. This old temple complex is in the custody
of Archaeological Survey of India. There are many attractive temples and
heritages here.
Chausath
Yogini Temple
A few Kms down
stream of Bheraghat is Panchawati ghat. Here the Bawanganga (also
known as Sarswati) joins the main river Narmada. This is called
so, because 52 springs supply water to this river. In the fork formed
by the joining Narmada and Bawanganga, a rock rises into a small
circular hillock, on which is situated the famous ancient Chausath
Yogini Temple. It is about 28 Kms from Jabalpur. This temple at
Bhera ghat (It was earlier called Bhairavi ghat) has its own significance
as it gives, as many as 64 names of Yoginis. Architectural and sculptural
study of this temple shows that it was the seat of the Shakti workship
right from 13 century. Though there are many Yogini temples in the
country, the pride of place goes to this 130 ft diameter circular
cloister temple
Nemawar
Siddeshwar Mandir
The sky
scrapping spire of the old and famous Siddeshwar temple is as beautiful
and attractive as its walls and idols. Situated at the mid point in the
course of Narmada river ie. half-way from its birth place and its confluence
with Arabian sea, the temple is dedicated to Lord Siddheshwar. It boasts
of several intricately carved idols, well designed motifes and spire.
The delicate carving on pillars attract thousands of pilgrims and art
lovers.
Chaubis Avatar Temple
A little
upstream of Omkareshwar on the right bank of Narmada is a beautiful temple
dedicated to 24 incarnations (Chaubis) avatar of Keshava. Here beautiful
24 idols of different forms of Keshava are installed, which attract huge
crowds during festivals. It will be affected when the power house of Omkareshwar
project comes up. The temple will be relocated in a nearby place.
Maheshwar
Situtated on the banks of the river Narmada, Maheshwar (Mahismati
known in Ramayana and Mahabharat) is significant for its many temples
built by Rani Ahilyabai of Indore. This was earlier capital of Holkars.
It is also renowned for its bathing Ghats. It is also famos for 'Maheshwari
sarees'. A Hydel project is under construction of upstream of the town.
Omkareshwar
Situated the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri are temples built
in the Medieval Brahmanic style. Omkareshwar has one of the twelve jyotirlings
enshrined at the temple of Shri Omkar Mandhata in picturesque surroundings.
A multipurpose project has also been proposed at this site.
Bhojpur Shiva Temple
Founded by the legendary
Parmar King of Dhar Raja Bhoj (1010-1055) Bhojpur is renowned for the
remains of its magnificent Shiva temple and cyclopean dam. This Bhojpur
Shiva temple also known as Somanatheshwar of the East, is situated about
28 Kms from Bhopal. The temple was never completed. The earthen ramp used
to raise it to dome-level still stands. Even with the ravages of time,
it remains one of the best examples of temple architecture of the 12/13th
centuries. The ruins of magnificent old dam clearly indicate that there
was a lake here, and the people knew the art of damming and storing water.

of Historical Interest:
Joga Ka Quilla
About
20 Kms down-stream of Nabhi point is Joga-ka-Quilla, an old strong rock
fort in the middle of the river Narmada. Once upon a time this fort was
used as a barrack to house armed forces. It has many special characteristics
like inaccessibility to enemy and strategic location, beside strong exteriors.
There are concealed deep wells, with water drawing facility. This fort
was built by Hosan Shah Ghori. Efforts are on to protect this monument.
Chhatri of Baji Rao Peshwa
Rauera,
a small village between Omkareshwar and Maheshwar is famous for the Chhatri
of Baji Rao Peshwa-I, the popular and powerful ruler of Peshwa dynasty.
It is believed that ashes of Peshwa are kept here. The beautiful monument
will be affected when the Maheshwar project comes through. Efforts are
on to protect this place by constructing concrete wall around this.
Bhimbetka
The paintings on rock
walls here depict vividly the life-style of the pre-historic cave-dwellers.
There are about 500 cave paintings here, which have been termed as archaeological
treasure - an invaluable chronicle in the history of man. The motifs in
the rocky shelters belonging to the Neolithic age, depict hunting, dancing,
music, horse, elephant riding, animals fighting. Popular religious and
ritual symbols also occur frequently. It is situated about 46 Kms south
of Bhopal.
